Ajax has died

Ajax died this morning, completely unexpectedly. He went, in the space of half an hour, from being a fine kitten running and playing, to being unable to walk or move. He panted a bit and he cried, and he died. There would not have been time to even get down the block with him.

The disturbing thing is that yesterday I took him to the vet, and had a checkup for him. At that time he was in obviously perfect health. The vet treated him for fleas, and goopy eye, and said he was a healthy kitten.

Today I took the bus back, carrying a shoebox, ( trying not to look like I had a dead kitten in my shoe-box,) and dropped him off for cremation.

It sucks, guys. The whole family is trying to figure out if we caused it somehow. Mike is blaming himself for using Woolite rug spray. Claire does not know yet, she is still at school.

We gave him a good week that he would not otherwise have had. He would have died that night had Claire not taken him in. Maybe by next week that will be some comfort.

I'm so sorry! What an awful thing to happen! Perhaps he had some weakness (lungs, kidneys?) that didn't show up in the vet's exam? I'll pray for your family that you can find the words to help the kids (and yourselves) deal with this. Peace.

I'm so sorry to hear that but at least he spent his last few days well cared for and loved.

I'm so sorry my dear. Try not to blame yourself - sometimes there are things that the best vet can't see from an exam.

it sounds to me like he had a brain tumor....running around, goopy eye both add up ad the vet may not have had any way of knowing.

Poor little thing and even more poor you...big {{{{{{{{{}}}}}}}}}}s

You didn't do anything wrong. I have worked for a vet, and I have adopted one shelter kitten and three feral kittens from my backyard. All of them had near death experiences from their rough start. One did not survive due to internal issues that didn't show up until she was on solid food and reached a certain size.

There are internal things going on that a first visit kitten check can't see. Sometimes, it is failure to thrive, losing mom so early.

I am very sorry for your loss, but little Ajax died warm and safe and loved. He was very lucky to have some time with you. You did a good job with him.

Oh I'm so very sorry to hear that. My thoughts are with you all. I hope it will be some comfort eventually, knowing that Ajax was loved and well cared for at the end. He was a very lucky kitten indeed that Clare found him when she did. Hugs to you all.

Oh goodness, I'm so sorry. I can't imagine how that must feel. But at least, as others have said, he went out in a warm house instead of on the streets. Hopefully you can take some sort of comfort from that.

Really sorry. He might have had a condition that the vet did not know about or got into something you did not know was there. So sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry. Ajax was so tiny and cute. I know he was one of your family though his time with you was not long. My deepest sympathy to you and your family. He might have given you a great pleasure but you too have given him a home and a happy life even if it's short, he must love it.
