Day Is Done
“Shh-- stop wiggling Horatio.”
Archie's hand on his shoulder, heavy as a lion's paw.
“If you keep jumping around it will pull.”
“I'm not jumping around.”
He pulled Horatio back between his knees by main force. Despite the threats the comb was gentle. He lifted the heavy curls off of Horatio's neck, and trailed his fingers over the skin underneath.
“Oh, that's--”
The back of his neck was white and innocent. Archie pressed a kiss to the hairline. He felt Horatio shiver as he smiled against the skin.
On the next pass the comb caught. Horatio yelped.
“What have you-- Horatio you have sea-weed in your hair. It is all stuck together here with kelp. How did you manage that?”
“It was windy.” Horatio's voice was muffled.
“What?”
“On watch, last night. It was windy-- must have blown in there somehow.”
Archie gave a snort of astonishment, but his fingers, were deft and careful, working the hair free.
“Done now, Honeybee.”
“Oh, All right.” Neither of them moved. Archie's hands were stroking, pulling the curls out to watch them spring back again.
“Do you want to comb mine?”
“Hmm?”
Horatio's face was averted.
“I said-- ”
“Your knee, Archie.”
“Yes, that is my... knee.” Archie's voice was rather faint.
The fingers trailing there, the soft mouth...
“ Lets leave the comb for morning.”
