kitchen list

My turn---

Bold the ones you have and use at least once a year, italicize the ones you have and don't use, strike through the ones you have had but got rid of:
I wonder how many pasta machines, breadmakers, juicers, blenders, deep fat fryers, egg boilers, melon ballers, sandwich makers, pastrybrushes, cheese knives, electric woks, miniature salad spinners, griddle pans, jam funnels, meat thermometers, filleting knives, eggpoachers, cake stands, garlic crushers, martini glasses, tea strainers, bamboo steamers, pizza stones, coffee grinders, milk frothers, piping bags, banana stands, fluted pastry wheels, tagine dishes, conical strainers, rice cookers, steam cookers, pressure cookers, slowcookers, spaetzle makers, cookie presses, gravy strainers, double boilers (bains marie), sukiyaki stoves, ice cream makers, and fondue sets languish dustily at the back of the nation's cupboards.

I would say that all the things in Bold I actually use often. Most of them have several or many uses.

The thing I use most of all is a cast iron frying pan. It is a really big one, about 5 inches deep, and maybe 16 across. I can bake, boil, fry, and pretty much anything else in it. And it is perfect as a big stable bottom for double boiling.

The best thing is: I did not buy it. Husband and I were sent to Norfolk Virginia in 1987. We moved into a terrible neglected little house in the scarey part of town. The grass in the yard was knee high. We went to mow the lawn, but we had to remove debris first. There were buckets, and car parts, and all sorts of things back there. We had to check carefully, we could not see the ground and did not want to run into anything with the lawn mower.

At the very last minute, we found the frying pan. It didn't look like much. It was orange with rust. But husband fixed it up with a grinding wheel. With all the rust removed and some oil rubbed on and off, it looked like new. I know it seems strange to find kitchen equipment, but I could not see any logical reason not to take and  use it.

I have used it at least 3 times a week ever since.
