Blessing of the animals

Today's Gothamist has pictures of the animals at St John the Divine. I went with Hazel  a few years back. It is an interfaith animal extravaganza. It goes on for hours. Lots of fun. Hazel sat politely in a pew with me. She was very interested in the smell of things like sheep and camels, which she had never smelled before.   Some dogs were not as serene-- but I did not see any fights.

Afterward, on the grounds outside they have adoption events.

Thank you for that link! The pictures were delightful! Do they bring animals from a local zoo?? Or do New Yorkers actually keep camels?

I expect that the camels come from a zoo. New York apartments are notoriously tiny.

The year I went, part of the service was conducted by a bishop who brought his cat with him on a leash. It sat at his feet as he spoke.

You could go up to get your animal blessed, or you could sit where you were and just bask. Hazel and I basked. Many of those who went up were little kids. Each animal was examined and admired in turn. One little guy about 4 went up with his millipede!
