“The pigtail steps.”
“Yes. Told you would see them again.” Archie's smile was a close mouthed triangle. His eyes shone.
“Do you remember?” His voice was very soft.
“Of course I remember.”
Horatio's voice was hushed too. He reached out as if to take Archie's hand. He did not, not quite, but he brushed the outside edge of Archie's smallest finger with his own, stroking the arc of it, down to the fingernail. Archie did not move, but Horatio saw his breath stop and then start again. The blue wool of his jacket heaved, tightened. Horatio saw the flick of those blue eyes sideways.
The sun was fading, dropped behind the buildings now, it shone in shards, cream and gold, lemon, tangerine. It lingered on some walls, caressing them, it dropped others into purple shadow. A land breeze had come, ruffling the leaves.
One of the houses nearby spilled music from a window, Archie smiled again. Not a smile of memory this, but a smile of present delight. Time to go.
