Do you guys know this one?

In my last story this is what Archie was trying to do. I don't know if he was right or not, but he was trying to be kind. That counts for an awful lot. I think. Reminded me a little of this.

Tell All The Truth

Tell all the truth but tell it slant,
Success in circuit lies,
Too bright for our infirm delight
The truth's superb surprise;

As lightning to the children eased
With explanation kind,
The truth must dazzle gradually
Or every man be blind.

I don't know this one, I don't know much Emily Dickinson at all in fact. It's a perfect accompaniment to your fic, which I loved. "Tell it slant"....wise words indeed, and words that I am sure both Horatio and Archie would appreciate.

Yes. I can see Archie thinking that way.

I think Dickinson meant a greater or more spiritual truth-- but it reminded me of her poem anyway. The truth is always best if you can give it kindly.

(Orlando did the same when the boy in 'Survivors' asked about the disposal of the dead at the front. I found that to be one of the most moving things of yours that I have ever read.)

Kindness in everything, eh?

I had to go and look up that scene. Did you mean the “We...we couldn’t always manage to do everything we wanted for them. Not the services which they might have received at home.” bit?

Yes-- that. That right there is one of the kindest things Orlando ever did I think. It certainly makes up for years of scowling!

*nods* I'm writing him in the 1909 version at present and have to keep reminding myself that he's not the creature of 1919.
