“It is just as big as I recalled.”

“Yes,” said Horatio.

Archie's face was hesitant, his smile
flickering. Horatio reached out, touched his cheek, to steady it.
Archie brought his own up, to hold it, warm there.

“I thought, it must have been
smaller, that I had remembered with advantages.” Archie's voice
faltered a little. “I thought of it so often you know.”

“Me too.”

“That day, when you brought me
here.”

And Archie did not say that he had kept
the memory of that day apart. He had held it jealously close, as he
suffered in his chains. It had sustained him in thirst, and cold, and
agony. He had held to it, until Spain where for a time he had lost
all belief.

He did not need to say this. Horatio
and he were here. It was just as it had been, the green arched the
pond, and he could hear the plunk of frogs, and the drone of the
jeweled dragonflies. He could feel the soft dampness, in his mouth as
he breathed it. It was like a kiss.

“Don't just stand there,” Horatio
said. “Take your clothes off.”

I confess: the first line gave me naughty thoughts :)

Awwwww... that is soooo sweet :) And too short :)

Sol Stein, the only author I highly recommend when discussin the topic 'writing', wrote: 'Use all your five senses.' He is right. And you did it, too :)

...the plunk of frogs, and the drone of the jeweled dragonflies.

YAY! It lives :)

So pleased that you liked it.

Way back, when Archie visited Horatio for the first time, they went swimming together. That is what they are talking about.

I am going to do a longer piece, I think, about this day at the pond. Last night I just wanted to do a sort of short exercise.

I only saw the series. Is Archie in the books, too????

Short is ok :) But longer is much more to read and much more to enjoy :)
I agree: sometimes you have to fix a single thought. I'm envious of people, who can write 10K fics :) At present - no time :)

Keep on writing :) I enjoyed it :)

Oh, I should have been more clear. I meant further back in my story.

Archie is not really in the books. But they are still very good. (There is a whole one from Bush's pov.)

This passage has a jeweled quality. I can almost see Archie looking at the pond with that little hesitant half-melancholy smile.

The sad smile that JB does so well... He is so good at looking sad. I often wonder what he is actually thinking about when dows that, I mean is he totally inhabiting the character, or is there some sad thing in his own life he is drawing on?

I hope not. For all he looks pretty when he suffers, I hope his real life is happy.
