Guestion for Master's Mates in Research

What was a normal birthday celebration like? For kids?

I am pretty sure no birthday song, or special cake, or candles. What would Horatio and Archie experienced on birthdays?

This is for a story.

Thanks guys

Hmmm good question... I have never come across a historical account of a child's birthday from this period but I suspect that's mainly because I've been reading naval history! I wonder if there is any mention of children's birthdays in Jane Austen or Georgette Heyer?

I would guess that children might have received a small gift and perhaps a treat of some kind if their parents had the means.

I got a brown paper bag of plums from my granny for my 5th birthday and it's about the only childhood birthday present that I can remember to this day!

I am imagining child Horatio getting a book.

Archie, I am more of two minds about. His parents obviously had means, but also more kids. I bet he would have liked a new book too.

I usually got a new book, (One year a bicycle which was declared 'too big' and put into the attic for months.)

Yes I can imagine Horatio getting a book too. Maybe Archie got taken to the theatre? :)

Yes the bike thing was absolutely rubbish. I was so disappointed.

Makes sense that Archie would get taken to the theater. A winter birthday for him then, I guess.

Awww poor small Eglantine :( Few things make me sadder than the thought of a disappointed child.

Archie's birthday is the 12th of February. I have Decided. And no one will convince me otherwise!

Feb 12 sounds good to me. The Kennedy family got a nice new baby in grim old February when nothing fun ever happens!

He's no bigger than a lamb is he? A lamb could just bounce him right over!
