Sabir is settling in. He has learned an awful lot in the last 3 days. He has learned his name, and where he lives, and what cats are,and that they have a scary business end that they will not hesitate to use. He has figured out what dog treats are. He has learned what a home is. He never lived in one before. He has learned about blankets and furniture. He has learned to go up and down stairs. He has learned that there are approved times and places for excretion. (He gets it right about half the time,) He knows who the family is. He has figured out that there are some things he is permitted to chew or eat, and some things (electrical cords, litter boxes, books,) seem like they would be fine and gain him a sharp 'NO.' He has found that human toes are fun to chew on, and human hands don't hit. They pat and tickle which is lovely, and they clean your nose sometimes, which is nasty.

He is younger than I thought, four months not five. He still has all his baby teeth. None of them are even loose yet. His gums are sore and itchy though. He is teething like crazy. He has a gentle mouth though, to go with the hound voice. He takes food from the hand with extreme gentleness, as Hazel did.

T

They wormed him at the shelter here. He needed it. He had the worst tapeworm situation I ever saw. He eliminated not only the segments, lots of them, but an entire translucent worm as long as my forearm. I think this may go some distance to explain why he was so skinny. He has great thick legs meant for a big dog, but his body is small and light. I believe he got good care and food at both shelters; (here and in Baku.) But he has probably had those tapes all his little life. No way could he gain weight and size as he was meant to do. I have not seen any signs of roundworms or fleas, or anything else ugly. He should make up for lost time by growing extra fast now. I am inclined to feed him often. He is inclined the same way. Today he had his first taste of PB&J. I gave him a little of mine. He liked it. He also knows now that the kitchen and refrig is where the good things come from.

Such a lot for his little brain to learn in just 4 days. He is like a toddler. He goes and goes, and then he falls down asleep all at once. I had forgotten how much work puppies are! I am pretty tired myself. There has been an awful lot of laundry and floor cleaning. He has the idea that if you cannot make it down the stairs in time you can pee on anything rectangular. we have given him a blanket for his own, and he needs it washed over and over. Claire gave him an old rag doll to keep. He peed on that too.

Anyway, that is probably more dog news than anyone wants. I will get my head above the surface one day soon. How are all of you?

The people I work for have a litter box which they keep in the bathroom for the dog when he can't get outside. I never had pets as a kid (other than bringing a turtle home from the lake) and it took a while to get used to a dog underfoot (I'm a nanny).

I have always had animals, and have had puppies before-- but I had forgotten how much work they are!

Oh, bless him!

Can you get Puppy Pads over there? They're a real godsend for soaking up little accidents in the first few weeks.

Yes, we have them. He tries to use them, but sometimes he spots another rectangle that he figures will do as well!

I think I may write a little letter and send a picture to the shelter in Baku; something short that they can Google translate if they need to do that...

I already called the Brooklyn shelter, to ask if he had been wormed. I know it is probably standard, but I wanted to make sure.I was able to thank them and tell them how happy we are, and how well he is doing.

As far as making life for him, I can tell already that we lucked out. We got an awesome little dog!

I have taken in a Jack Russell pup, now three months old. Her mum was rescued and then produced four puppies. Sukie, like yours, pees on anything! Just learning to go outside to do it but there are so many interesting things out there, why waste time peeing? I'm lucky, I just have to open the back door for her to go out. Luckily no sign of worms but she is still going to be wormed every month until six months. My two other dogs have accepted her now, though the lurcher was terrified of her to start with. Good luck with Sabir. He'll soon start to gain condition once you've got rid of the parasites.

Jack Russell-- wow. Totally different attitude there from a laid-back lurcher.

We have four flights of stairs to get to the street. He had to be carried at first, but now he goes up and down like a pro. I know he will get it eventually. We just have to be patient with him.

I have a lurcher too and she won't go up or down stairs! I should have persevered with her when she was little. They are great dogs though, and as you say totally different from JRs.

No such thing as too much dog news! So glad to hear Sabir is settling in. There's so much for puppies to learn and it's so easy to forget how much they have to take in. He is a very lucky pup indeed to have landed with such a kind and patient family :)

dog news is fabulous at any time !

Must send him some doggie treats which amaraal and I found in a new pet store here which she took home for her Blacky as a late Christmas gift.
The couple are trying to make a going of it despite a branch of our big pets chain being quite near and I am supporting them as often as a non- pet owning person can.So far anteros_lmcs kitties and enkiduts two rescue girls have helped as well as Blacky
I Am going to tell the owners they can advertise 'as enjoyed in Glasgow, Washington State, the Westerwald and now....New York :)
