A little surprised to see sepia included - cuttle fish and squid ink is far from poisonous and an important ingredient in some mediteraneean cooking

With modern paints, I wonder if sometimes they don't use the pigment names figuratively? With the acrylics I have now, I have a tube of "Ivory Black" but I doubt it contains charred tusks. I used to have tubes of "Mars Black" as well.

Ooh what a fabulous resource! I wish I'd had this while I was writing Lord Exmouth's Commission. I spent ages trying to find out about early 19th century pigments!
